Red Devils remain
unbeaten in District
basketball action, 4-0

Lancaster remains unbeaten in the Northern Neck District after jumping to a 17-point lead in the first quarter and cruising to a 73-42 win over Rappahannock last Friday.

Melvin Gregory scored 16 points and had 14 rebounds as Lancaster picked up its fourth straight district win.

The Red Devils are still ranked fourth in the state in the Associated Press Group A poll with 54 points. They are 15-1 overall and 4-0 in the district. Lancaster was scheduled to complete its first round of district play earlier this week against Northumberland and will begin making its second round through the league tomorrow (January 28) at home against Colonial Beach.

The Devils had little trouble with Rappahannock last Friday, outscoring the hosts 23-7 in the first quarter and holding a 35-23 lead at the half.

Lancaster used a 21-8 run in the third to go up 56-31 and coast to the win.

Aaron Manning added 13 points for Lancaster and Brandon Morris was 3-for-3 at the line and a hit a three-pointer to chip in 12 for the Devils.

Shayvon Murphy scored 12 and Andre Brown 11 to lead the Raiders.

Lancaster blew open a tie game with a 22-8 run in the second quarter last Tuesday to beat Middlesex, 73-51.

The two teams were tied 17-17 after the first period, but Lancaster outscored the host Chargers by 14 in the second to take a 39-25 lead at the half.

Lancaster put up another seven unanswered in the fourth for the easy win.

“It was tight after one quarter but our guys didn’t blink,” said LHS coach Tim Rice. “We just gradually took over and eased through it.”

Gregory had a double-double to lead Lancaster with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Michael Coleman scored 16 points and was perfect from the line, hitting 6-of-6, and Morris added 13.

Rakeem Lockley scored 18 points to lead the Chargers.

“We knew we had to focus on [Lockley] and did a good job on him,” said Rice. “We played well in our zone and held him to under 20 points. Our big guy ran the floor really well and had three dunks to make the highlights.”

In JV games, Lancaster went 2-1 last week and suffered its first loss in the Northern Neck District.

Essex trailed by four at the half, took its first lead in the third quarter and went on to edge the Devils, 39-38, in a district game on January 13.

Lancaster led 17-13 at the break, but gave up one unanswered basket to the Trojans in the third as Essex took a 28-26 lead. The Trojans outscored Lancaster 13-10 in the fourth with Sterling Hammond scoring six points.

TreVon Taylor scored six of Lancaster’s 10 in the fourth quarter and led the team with 16 points. Tykwan Redmond added seven for the Devils.

Lancaster rebounded to pick up a non-district win, 49-46, over Middlesex last Tuesday. A.J. Stewart led a balanced attack for the Devils with 12 points. DeVante Stewart scored nine and Johnothan Towles put up seven. Lancaster had three players score six points including Taylor, Redmond and Bridell Carter.

Redmond scored 14 points to lead Lancaster over Rappahannock, 37-25, in a district game last Friday.

After getting off to a sluggish start with just four points on field goals from A.J. Stewart and D. Stewart in the first quarter, Lancaster led by four at the half. The Devils put up another three unanswered in the third and ended with a 12-7 run in the final minutes.

D. Stewart contributed nine points for Lancaster.
