The apple butter crew puts up 84 pints for sale at the annual Fairfields Fall Festival. Another batch is promised on festival day.

Friends and members of the church recently gathered and peeled, cored and sliced five bushels of apples, said Bob Matthews. The apples were then cooked outside over a hardwood fire. They cooked for eight hours and were stirred constantly.

Near the end of the process, the three master tasters sampled the product and added the necessary spices, said Matthews. Once they all agreed the apple butter was done, it was bottled.

The five bushels produced 84 pints of apple butter. The apple butter will be for sale at the Fall Festival, he said. An additional batch will be prepared the day of the festival.

The festival promises something for everybody, added Matthews.

There will be a variety of arts and crafts, and plenty of free children’s activities. Other food products for sale will include North Carolina-style pork barbecue, hot dogs, baked goods, soups and clam chowder.

Additionally, there will be a silent auction and a White Elephant table. Musical entertainment will be provided all day.
