Residents are urged to contact their local health department to schedule an appointment time based on the clinic dates, said nurse manager Linda Lee. The appointment time will provide a flu shot without a delay or long waiting period.

Influenza (“flu”) is a contagious disease. It is caused by the influenza virus which can be spread by coughing, sneezing, or nasal secretions. Anyone can get influenza, but rates of infection are highest among children, explained Lee.

For most people, symptoms last only a few days, she said. Symptoms include fever, chills, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, cough, headache, and a runny or stuffy nose. Other illnesses can have the same symptoms and are often mistaken for influenza.

Everyone who is at least 6 months of age should get a flu vaccine. It’s especially important for those at high risk of developing serious complications like pneumonia if they get sick with the flu. This includes persons with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and lung disease; pregnant women; and persons ages 65 and older.

People who live with or care for others who are at high risk of developing serious complications, or have the medical conditions listed above should consider protecting themselves from influenza by getting a flu shot.

Clinic dates are:

• Lancaster County Health Department, October 16 and 31; 462-5197.

• Middlesex County Health Department, October 15, 16 and 29; 758-2381.

• Northumberland County Health Department, October 18, 25 and 30; 580-3731.

• Richmond County Health Department, October 19, 24, 25 and 29; 333-3043.

• Westmoreland County Health Department, October 15, 17, 22, 24, 25 and 29; 493-1124.

Flu vaccines will be administered by a licensed health care provider, said Lee. The cost for self-pay customers is $25.

Pneumovax is also being offered at $84.38 for self pay customers, she said. As a courtesy to those with insurance, the Health Department will bill participating providers.
