Two Northern Neck
volleyball teams advance
to the state tournament

Two Northern Neck District teams advanced this week to the state Group A volleyball tournament.

Northumberland finished as the runner-up in the Region A, Division 2 tournament to defending state champion Mathews last week and was scheduled to travel to Region B champion Stuarts Draft on Tuesday. If the Lady Indians win, they will play the winner of the Giles versus Central-Wise game at 2:30 p.m. Friday, November 16, at the Siegel Center in Richmond.

Mathews, which swept Northumberland 3-0 in last week’s regional final, was scheduled to host Region B runner-up Goochland. A win would advance the Blue Devils to a semifinal match tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. at the Siegel Center against the winner of the Gate City versus James River-Buchanan contest.

The Northern Neck’s Rappahannock was crowned the Region A, Divsion 1 champion last Thursday with a 3-2 win over Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (ARGS). ARGS was scheduled to travel to Altavista for a state quarterfinal while the Raiderettes were to host Region B runner-up Luray.

The Division 1 semifinals also are tomorrow at the Siegel Center with the winners of the Altavista versus ARGS match and the Auburn versus Clintwood match playing at 10:30 a.m. The winners of the Rappahannock versus Luray match play the winner of the Rye Cove versus Galax match at 12:30 p.m.

In the Region A, Division 2 tournament, Mathews defeated Northumberland, 25-14, 25-15, 25-10, in the championship.

Jessie Rew led the Indians at the net with four kills and four blocks while Rebecca Daniel had two kills and three blocks. Connor Haislip had 12 digs.

Northumberland shut out Windsor, 3-0, in the semifinal match, winning 25-12, 25-18, 25-17.

Mary Kathryn Hall led the Indians with eight kills, 11 assists and two aces on serves. Katie Crowther had seven kills and two blocks and Rew had six kills and two aces.
