The Honorable and Mrs. Harwood Cochrane are well-known for their love of the arts, said museum executive director Terri Thaxton. They are major benefactors of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and that love is reflected everywhere throughout their home.

The front entrance to the house looks like a charming French country cottage complete with courtyard and picket fence, said Thaxton. Upon entering, one finds a colorful, sprawling home filled with stunning 18th-century English and American antiques, sculptures and paintings from 18th-century artists and several lovely impressionist paintings by the renowned Richmond artist, Louise Cochrane. The interior was professionally decorated using colorful antique Persian rugs, bold printed fabrics and deeply colored walls.

On York Road is the Geier Cottage, home of Jack and Meredith Geier. Built in 1942, it underwent a complete renovation in 2010, said Thaxton. The vast upgrading plans kept only the original flooring.

The new open floor plan and extensive outdoor living space reflect the living style of the couple. Full of unexpected luxuries and with an interesting style of decorating, the natural light throughout and the warmth of a wood stove, combine to create a feeling of the bay meeting the Blue Ridge mountains, she said.

Tour tickets are $20 and are available at the Steamboat Era Museum at 156 King Carter Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, or call Thaxton at 438-6888.
