‘The program theme is Watershed to Water’s Edge and will showcase the Master Gardeners’ new community-service initiative, entitled Integrated-Shoreline Evaluation Assistance (I-SEA). Beginning this spring, members of the I-SEA team will conduct on-site evaluations and provide recommendations to homeowners to address storm water runoff and shoreline erosion concerns, according to seminar chairman Janice Mahoney.
The theme aims to increase awareness about risks to water quality in the Northern Neck, and offer practical steps the gardening community can take to conserve water and protect the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, said Mahoney.
“In a region bounded by two major river systems and the bay, water issues are never far from our consciousness as gardenersin choices we make about what and where to plant, how and when to water, or how to protect our properties from erosion,” she said. “These choices cumulatively have an impact on the quality of our waterboth underground and on the surface. With improved knowledge of the situation here in the Northern Neck, an understanding of what’s at stake, and a heightened sense of our stewardship responsibilities to protect this life-sustaining resource, the gardening community in our region can be a positive agent for change.”
The seminar will offer four lecture sessions, with time to interact with exhibitors, including businesses that specialize in shoreline management and erosion control.
Geologist Frank Fletcher will discuss threats facing the region’s groundwater supply.
Leslie and Kody Cario of Environmental Concerns Inc. will discuss options for wetlands and shoreline management with an emphasis on the benefits of living shorelines.
North Carolina State horticultural science professor and Emmy-winning television garden show host Bryce Lane will discuss the science behind successful water-wise gardens.
The fee is $25 with advance registration, or $30 at the door. Registration forms are available at f nnmg.org, or call Virginia Cooperative Extension in Northumberland County at 580-5694.
