Schoolwide art show slated April 19 and 20

Lancaster Public Schools will host its annual student art show in conjunction with the Rapphannock Foundation for the Arts and the Rapphannock Art League.

The show will be open to students April 19 and to the community April 20 in the Lancaster Middle School Gymnasium, said Lancaster Primary School art teacher Meghan Bowis.

Students also will create edible art displays that can be enjoyed on Saturday.

Judges are Mary Grafton Yagel, Karin Heffernan, Sukey Starkey and Ann Vilet.

Yagel received a bachelor’s in fine arts from the College of William and Mary. She taught art for 31 years in Richmond and Lancaster Public Schools. She serves as chairman of the scholarship committee of the RAL.

Heffernan earned a bachelor’s in English and elementary education at the University of Washington. She taught kindergarten for 13 years in West Virginia and Florida, and art for a further 13 years to pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students in Miami.

Starkey earned her bachelor’s in psychology from the University of Tennessee and a master’s in school library media from Western Maryland College. She is vice president of the RAL and coordinator of the children’s education program. She owns Everything Mosaic in Ophelia.

Vilet is an artist and a member of the Rappahannock Art League.
