offer goods from barnyard to vine

The season-opening Heathsville Farmers’ Market April 20 will coincide with the sixth annual Wine Fest at Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern.

Located in the outdoor pavilion and grounds adjacent to The Tavern in Heathsville, market hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Wine Fest behind The Tavern is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A number of farmers have signed up for market, including Garner’s Produce in Warsaw, Walnut Hill Farm in Colonial Beach, and L&M Produce in Westmoreland, said RH/HT executive director Corinne Anthony. Georgiatown Farm in White Stone will sell fresh lamb, poultry and pork.

Shoppers at the market also will find fresh-baked artisan bread, nursery plants for spring planting and a variety of locally-made handcrafts, said Anthony.

The Wine Fest gives patrons a chance to taste the wines of Northern Neck in one afternoon, she said. Featuring the wines of the Chesapeake Wine Trail, this annual event gathers eight wineries in one location.

The entrance fee is $12 per person, which includes a commemorative wine glass. Food also will be available for purchase. Tickets will be sold at the gate on the day of the Wine Fest.

The Tavern’s active artisan groups will be working and selling their handmade wares, added Anthony. This includes the Tavern Blacksmith Guild, the Spinners and Weavers Guild, the Woodworkers Guild and the Quilters Guild. The Tavern Gift Shop also will also be open.
