Barrack matches school strikeout record

Will Barrack of Alfonso recently matched the University of Massachusetts Boston record for strikeouts in a single game to earn two pitcher of the week honors.

Barrack was named the Little East Conference’s Pitcher of the Week and selected as the top hurler in Division III New England baseball by ECAC for the week of March 25.

Barrack, the son of Billy and Jamie Barrack, is a 6-foot-5-inch junior right hander for the UMass Boston Beacons.

Barrack fanned 16 batters while allowing two earned runs on three hits in the Beacons’ 5-4 win over Concordia University March 20 in Orlando, Fla.

The Beacons traveled to Florida for the Russ Math Invitational Tournament March 14-21. The Beacons finished the tournament with a 3-6 record.

Barrack had at least two strikeouts in six of the seven innings he pitched against Concordia and struck out the side in order twice. In his seven innings on the mound, Barrack retired 16 at the plate, walked three and gave up three hits.

Reliever Matt Dziok pitched the last two innings for the save and struck out three for a single game record with a combined effort of 19 strikeouts. The previous Beacons’ record for strikeouts in a single game was 17, set in 2006.

Billy, Jamie and Barrack’s sister, Whitney, attended the tournament in Florida and were there to see him tie the school record.

The Beacons advanced to the College World Series in Division 3 baseball in 2010.l in 2010.
