The match was Lancaster’s final of the regular season. The Lady Devils enter this week’s district tournament in fourth place at 0-6 in the district and were scheduled to play first-place Northumberland (5-0-1) in a semifinal game Wednesday. Second-place Essex (3-2-1) met third-place Washington & Lee (2-2-2) in the other semifinal.
The winners play in the championship game tomorrow (May 24) at 6 p.m. at Essex High School.
In last Wednesday’s game, Bridgette McLaughlin opened the scoring 17 minutes in on an unassisted shot and Emily Sprague scored unassisted on a break-away nine minutes later to give the Indians a 2-0 lead at the half.
Megan Baughan scored about 16 minutes into the second half to give NHS a 3-0 lead and cap the scoring for the Indians.
Lancaster’s Lauren James scored with two minutes remaining for the 3-1 final.
The Indians took 22 shots with Lancaster goalkeeper Katie Cromer stopping 13. McLaughlin led NHS with nine shots while India Equiguren took six.
Goalkeeper Sydnee Setser had six saves for the Indians.
In other games, Washington & Lee and Northumberland played to a scoreless tie in the regular season finale for both teams last Friday.
NHS outshot the Eagles, 24-12. McLaughlin led with nine shots and Equiguren had five.
Megan Daiger took four shots to lead the Lady Eagles.
In goal for NHS, Gena Boarman had 11 saves. The Eagles’ Brittany Payne had 15 saves.
In non-district action, Northampton outlasted Northumberland, 4-1, on May 13.
Northumberland’s only goal came five minutes into the contest on a shot from the right side of the penalty box by McLaughlin.
The Yellow Jackets of the Eastern Shore District scored two goals in each half, including two off penalty shots.
Boarman had 24 saves in the game.
In the JV contest, Northampton edged Northumberland, 3-2, with Brianna Turner scoring for NHS 16 minutes into the second half. Turner shot again two minutes later and her kick bounced off the post and was followed by Karla Martinez for a goal.
The Yellow Jackets broke a 2-2 tie with the winning goal in the final 10 seconds of the game.
