“It was a great ball game,” said LHS coach Welby Saunders. “Someone had to lose and we made more mistakes than Essex and they capitalized on our mistakes. Our pitching continues to be strong. We just need to start hitting.”

Lancaster opened the scoring with a run in the first after William Abbott hit a single, then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Demetrick Lee hit into a fielder’s choice to score Abbott.

Lancaster held the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third when Essex tied the game with a run on a walk, stolen base and one-out single.

Kedrick Lee recorded an RBI in the top of the fifth for the Devils when he hit a two-out single to score Daniel Thomas. Thomas had drawn a lead-off walk, then advanced to second on a balk and stole third on a passed ball.

Essex retied the score in the bottom of the fifth when its lead-off batter was hit by pitch to reach base and scored on a two-out single.

The Devils threatened in the top of the sixth when Abbott laid down a lead-off bunt and advanced to third on a sacrifice by D. Lee. Lancaster left Abbott stranded.

Essex led off with back-to-back hits in the bottom of the seventh. Later, with two outs, Lancaster intentionally loaded the bases. The strategy didn’t work when Lancaster walked in the winning run.

Colton Hayden pitched five innings for Lancaster and gave up three hits, walked one, hit two batters and struck out three. Josh Moore pitched the last two innings, walking three, striking out two and giving up three hits.

Abbott led LHS at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. K. Lee was 1-for-2 with an RBI and D. Thomas had a run scored.

The Devils are 4-5 in the district and 6-7 overall as they head into the final week of regular season play. Lancaster will travel to Washington & Lee today (May 9) and host Northumberland Tuesday, May 14, in the regular season finale.

The Devils will host the Northern Neck District tournament beginning May 21 with semifinal games at Dreamfields near Kilmarnock. The tournament championship will be decided May 23.
