Flying Scot fall racing series to begin

by Rick Peterson, Fleet Captain

The Flying Scot Fall Series is upon us, with race dates scheduled for Sundays August 25, September 8 & 15, and October 6, with a makeup (if necessary) on October 27. As with the Spring Series, the Scots will be racing on the same course as the Typhoons, but with separate starts, and these Sunday afternoons are always full of fun and excitement on the water.

The races are then followed by a social gathering for all participants on the Rappahannock River Yacht Club (RRYC) porch. First race warning is at 1 p.m., so there’s time to attend church in the morning and still come out for a glorious fall afternoon of racing fun.

Hal Starke and Ron Mihills aboard Solas currently hold the lead in the Flying Scot 2013 standings, followed by Rick and Ginger Peterson on Surprise and Burke Johnson and team aboard Starry Vere.

The Scot is an ideal “one design” sloop, normally sailed by a two-person crew. With a roomy and comfortable cockpit, it is fun and exciting to sail both as a racer or family daysailer. Many crews are composed of husband and wife or parent-child teams.

The RRYC fleet is composed of sailors with a variety of sailing and racing experience, and participation is encouraged for those who haven’t had much or even any racing experience but want to learn more about racing and get into the program.

If you have access to a Flying Scot, or would like to use the Club Scot, or perhaps just crew for another, give Fleet Captain Rick Peterson a call. Or, if you’d like to spend an hour or two on a Scot and see what it’s like, give any member of the fleet a call and he or she will help arrange to get you out on the water.

Remember, the next race day is Sunday, August 25. Call Peterson at 804-356-8941 (cell), or office, 804-353-3051.
