Jim Wright, singer/songwriter/folk rocker, former White Stone resident and CMG family doctor, will headline with some “provocateur folk rock.” What’s provocateur folk rock? “Well,” said Jim, “let’s just say that we’re all going to have a good time.”
Since leaving White Stone three years ago, Jim has been playing venues in central Virginia with his energetic mix of folk, rock and alternative music as well as some originals. “I think what I do could best be described as ‘Hipster Folk Rock’ with a little bit of the classics Dylan, Neil Young, and Van Morrison and a deep interest in alternative music,” said Wright. “Expect to hear Lumineers, Coldplay, Glen Hansard, Violent Femmes, Wilco. I might even throw in The Buggles if it’s a good crowd. And I fully expect it to be, given that it’s a fundraiser for the Northern Neck Family YMCA!”
Wright now lives in Goochland with his wife and four children. He’s still practicing medicine but loves performing in his spare time. You can catch him again at Williaby’s Café on September 20 performing in “Weekender,” an acoustic duo.
In addition to Jim Wright, Mary and The Janes (MJ Anderson, Susan Johnson, Jerry Brockman, Don Lee and Troy Wolfrey), Brockman and Co. which includes Jerry and his sons, Christine Whitaker Wiggins, Mark Favazza and Gregg Shivers also will share a few of their favorites.
The event benefits the local YMCA’s Guardian Scholarship Program. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 17. They can be purchased from Mark Favazza at the Northern Neck Family YMCA, at Willaby’s Café in White Stone, or by calling (or texting) Lisa Shivers at 577-3238. Some tickets will be available at the door. The event begins at 4 p.m. with music going until 8:30 p.m. or later. Willaby’s will be offering a limited menu of beach food (crab cakes, BBQ with coleslaw, and burgers) and beverages (soda, water, beer and wine).
“This is a family-friendly event so pack up your beach chairs and sand buckets and come on down for a great evening of fun,” said YMCA co-director of development Lisa Shivers.
