A new sign at the entrance to Dream Fields alerts passersby of the upcoming opening ceremonies for the 2014 Lancaster County Little League season. The sign replaces a smaller, older version and will be easier to update, reported Dream Fields board member Kathy Pittman. Photo by Lisa Hinton-Valdrighi

Along with the usual blessing of the season by the Rev. Craig Smith and the parade of players led by Ronald Hudson, the league will celebrate its beginnings and how the park came to be by honoring the Goodman family.

So named the Gloria L. Goodman Youth Park, the fields and surrounding property, which includes a recreational building and playground, were donated by the Goodman family to the little league some 50 years ago.

David Goodman of Richmond will be one of the honored guests at the ceremony and will announce other members of the family, one of whom will throw out the first pitch.

The Lancaster High School chorus will sing the national anthem and teams will take the field at 4 p.m.

In minor boys baseball, the Rockets will play the Tides (field 1) at 4 p.m., while the Braves will play the Stingrays (field 3) in machine pitch boys. Also at 4 p.m., the Reds will play the Yankees (field 4) in tee-ball action and in junior/senior softball, Northumberland will play Lancaster Red (field 6). In minor boys baseball at 4 p.m., Northumberland Air Force will play the Squirrels (field 7).

At 4:30 p.m., Northumberland Konstant Khaos will play the Razorbacks (field 2) in major girls softball

At 6 p.m., the Orioles will play the Nationals (field 1) in major baseball and the Tigers will play the Pirates (field 7) in machine pitch boys. In machine pitch girls at 6 p.m., the Bobcats take on the Wildcats (field 3).

Lancaster Black will host Northumberland (field 6) at 6 p.m. in junior/senior softball.

The final game slated for opening day begins at 6:30 p.m. on field 2 when the Storm plays the Heat (field 2) in minor girls softball.
