Remembrance and walk slated at RW-C

Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury on May 30 will host a celebration combining two traditional annual events, the Memorial Day Remembrance and the Labyrinth Walk.

Activities will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Memorial Day Remembrance, at the labyrinth on RW-C’s campus, 132 Lancaster Drive, Irvington. Immediately following this ceremony, participants will be invited to participate in a meditative walk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. No reservations are required.

“In the past, we have held the Memorial Day Remembrance by our flagpole, but this year we are moving it to the labyrinth so the two events can be held in a single location,” said resident life coordinator Maria Ferrand.

Residents who are military veterans will carry a flag to the labyrinth, where a brief reading will be conducted, followed by a tribute to veterans who passed away during the previous year. The ceremony will end with attendees singing “Taps.”

The walk will give attendees a chance to participate in a time-honored ritual of contemplation and spiritual renewal, said Rebecca Ford, who has helped organize the walk for several years. Participants proceed at their own pace, she said.

“We are eager to welcome everyone to this year’s walk. Volunteers will be on hand to help people learn how to navigate the labyrinth walk so they may get full benefit from the experience,” said Ford.

Benches are positioned near the labyrinth for those who wish to relax, and water will be available to keep people hydrated on what could be a warm day in late May, she said. Participants also will be able to enjoy live music and periods of silence.
