The spring Typhoon Racing Season has come to a close and the results are in. For the first time, during regular weekly racing, there were two competitive fleets, the Championship and Corinthian. “Their team is great fun to compete against and generally at the top of the standings,” said Ned Crockett.

Gary Hooper and crew on board Kestrel came in second in the series followed by Ron and Brent Mihills placing third on Anthem. “I’ve been sailing these waters since I was a kid,” said Crockett. “It’s a pleasure to race against these knowledgeable teams on a regular basis.”

In the Corinthian Fleet, Danielle and George Kuper aboard Ty Affair won first-place honors. Harry and Jane Wells came in second on Tea Cup. They were followed by Stan Polhamus on Ty Affair for third.

John Friday, owner of Custom Yachts in Irvington, created a second trophy for the new fleet winners. Typhoon winners are allowed to keep their Championship Fleet or Corinthian Fleet Cup until the next racing season. The cups are passed to the first-place finishers each spring and fall.

In addition to Wednesday night racing, this year also marked the inaugural Women’s Typhoon Racing Program. Started by Stephanie Chaufourier, it took place on Sunday afternoons and was won by Danielle Kuper and Lisa Shivers aboard Ty Affair.

Top Typhoon racers acted as mentors to the women teams. Their coaching reportedly helped increase both the confidence and skill level of the women, insuring more racers in the future.
