Lancaster bands Mercy Creek and James Justin & Co. will perform at the Kekoka Music Festival Friday and Saturday, June 6 and 7, at the YMCA Camp Kekoka, 1083 Boys Camp Road, Kilmarnock.

The music begins at 8 p.m. Friday and continues to 10:50 p.m. Music resumes on Saturday from 2 to 10:45 p.m.

Mercy Creek performs original music they call aggressive folk rock. Singer/guitarist Cheryl Nystrom and song writing partner/drummer Jim Ball combine elements of modern folk, world beat, rock and hints of blues and bluegrass, said camp director Cassie Leichty.

James Justin Burke grew up with the sounds of his mother’s church choir and his father’s classic rock records, said Leichty. Joining Burke are two long-time collaborators and childhood friends. Bailey Horsley rocks the banjo and harmonica, while Tom Propst offers both his steady upright bass lines and the third in a trio of vocal harmonies.

“Both Mercy Creek and James Justin and Company are favorites at the festival each year,” said Leichty “Each group makes you want to dance and sing along.”

Tickets are $35 for adults, $15 for students and free for children younger than age 12. Purchase tickets at, or call 435-3616.

Festival proceeds benefit Camp Kekoka’s Guardian program, which funds scholarships for kids at the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA’s only residential camp, serving children ages 9 to 15.

Festival attendees may come by land or sea (free dinghy docking), rain or shine, and cabin rental and tent camping are available on site. Food and beverages (alcoholic and non) will be available for purchase. Attendees may bring in outside food and beverages, except for glass containers.

The festival is sponsored in part by the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts.
