The event, sponsored by the Foundation for Historic Christ Church, will help raise funds for the preservation and repair of the 1897 slate roof of the 1735 church, reported publicity chairman Marilyn Hedges. Festivities will include barbecue from Kilmarnock’s Savannah Joe’s, music by James Justin & Co., and 12 craft beers, served in a souvenir glass by distributor Specialty Beverage of Virginia.

James Justin & Co., featuring vocalist James Justin Burke, bassist Tom Propst and banjo player Bailey Horsley, will perform “non-traditional folk music” with a bluegrass tilt.

Sponsors include Chesapeake Bank, Burke’s Fine Jewelers, Dog & Oyster ( serving wine), Wells Fargo Advisors, Connemara, Big L Tire, Union First Market Bank, Dunton, Simmons & Dunton, L.L.P., Rumsey & Bugg, and Open Door Communications. Other sponsors are expected to be added as the event draws near, said Hedges.

The beer fest will be held, rain or shine, she said. Two tents, including one 100 x 40 feet, will ensure that folks stay dry and shaded, no matter the weather. The museum and the church will be open and staffed by docents until 6 p.m.

A $30 ticket will purchase four 6-ounce tastings of beer that range from pale ales to porter and lager, wine for those who prefer, soft drinks and water, barbecue, and music. Additional beer will be available for purchase. Hedges noted that IDs will be checked before serving alcoholic beverages.

A beer list appears at christchurch1735.com.

Tickets may be purchased through the website; at Christ Church, 420 Christ Church Road, Weems; by mail, P.O. Box 24, Irvington, VA 22480; or info@christchurch1735.org.
