The Little League state tournament opened July 16 with a welcome picnic for seven district championship teams from across the Commonwealth. Richmond County went unbeaten to win the District 15 championship two weeks ago and by the luck of the draw received a first-round bye.

Lacey Waldrop, the 2014 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year, was scheduled to make a guest appearance at the picnic and conduct a pitching clinic at the park. A junior right-hander, Waldrop led the Florida State Seminoles to a 55-7 record this season and the school’s first NCAA College World Series berth since 2004.

Tournament action was slated to begin at 10 a.m. today, July 17, with Rye Cove versus Azalea and Mechanicsville versus Clarke County. At noon, Northampton will play Wilson.

Richmond County will play the winner of the Northampton versus Wilson game at 4 p.m. Winners of the other two first round games also will play at 4 p.m. and the loser’s bracket play begins at 6 p.m.

Action continues at 10 a.m. July 18 with four games played throughout the day. A 10 a.m. game is scheduled Saturday, July 19, and the championship round is set to start at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 20.
