Northumberland shooting suspect surrenders

HEATHSVILLE—Bernard Lajon Jenkins, a suspect wanted in the September 12 murder of a 25-year-old Callao man surrendered to the Northumberland sheriff’s office at 9:45 a.m. September 13.

At 1:53 p.m. September 12, the Northumberland sheriff’s office received a call regarding a man who had been shot in the Fruit Plain Road area. The victim, Kevin Lamont Turner, 25, of Callao was found outside of the residence with multiple gunshot wounds. Medics were dispatched and found the victim to be deceased, reported the sheriff’s office.

Witnesses saw Jenkins leaving the scene in an emerald green 1998 Plymouth Breeze, according to the sheriff’s office. After phone negotiations among Jenkins, the sheriff’s office, and Commonwealth’s Attorney Jane Wrightson, the suspect surrendered.

The search which continued throughout the night involved the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police as well.
