There were a couple of nail-biters in the Region A, Division 2 championships at Lancaster High School with the host Lady Red Devils pulling off a one-point victory over Northumberland, 45-44, to win the Region A, Division 2 girls championship, while the Indians got by Essex by a point, 60-59, in the Division 2 boys final.
Lancaster's girls will play the Region B runner-up Clarke County at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 1 in a Division 2 state quarterfinal game at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, while Northumberland's boys will host Region B runner-up William Monroe in a boys quarterfinal game at 8:30 p.m. March 1 at the Siegel Center in Richmond.
As the Region A runners-up, both Northumberland's girls and Essex High's boys will also advance to the state tournament with the Lady Indians playing Region B champion George Mason at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 2 at Robinson Secondary School in northern Virginia. Essex will play Region B champion Dan River at 11:45 a.m. March 2 at Salem Civic Center.
In the Region A, Division 2 girls tournament, Colonial Beach beat Charles City, 59-44. The Lady Drifters will host Region B champ Altavista at 7 p.m. March 1 at the Siegel Center in Richmond.
