Local businesses launch
earthquake relief effort

by Starke Jett

Three small-business owners in Kilmarnock are raising funds for Haiti by selling coupons that can be redeemed for services in their establishments. Haiti is recovering from the worst earthquake there in 200 years, according to some sources. The death toll is estimated to be over 100,000 with many more displaced and homeless.

From left, Kilmarnock business owners Whitney Hathaway of Moxie, Arlene Crabbe of Healing Hands and Jennifer Bishop of Merle Norman are raising funds to send to Haiti.

Arlene Crabbe, owner of Healing Hands, a massage therapy business, Whitney Hathaway, owner of Moxie, a tanning and body salon, and Jennifer Bishop, owner of Merle Norman, a cosmetic and nail salon, decided to lend a hand because they wanted to help. One hundred percent of the money raised through the sale of the coupons will be given to either the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders, according to Crabbe.

“We are all healers,” said Crabbe of their effort. “It’s a basic human need to want to help others. We all grew up here in a community where we had to help each other. Now the community is bigger. Good deeds foster other good deeds.”

With the help of Ina Fuller, a licensed massage therapist, and Jamie Rice, a skin care specialist, the women will sell the $20 coupons at Moxie and at Merle Norman, both on Main Street in the Steptoe’s District of Kilmarnock. Donations also will be accepted. The coupons must be redeemed by April 17.
