With renovations complete, the Morris-Fisher Company stack on Cockrell's Creek is now illuminated.

“We were so pleased with last year’s event that we had to do it again,” said Save the Stack committee chairman Blaine Altaffer.
Steve Bassett is the featured musical entertainment along with Nightshift, Velvet Marias and Throwin’ Wake. Bassett will dedicate an entire set to music from Woodstock.
Other highlights include a volleyball tournament, food, and boat taxis for a tour of the stack.
There also will be a raffle for a hand-carved osprey sitting on a 100-year-old brick from the stack. The carving was donated by award-winning waterfowl carver Herb Lewis of Fleeton.
“We hope to raise over $30,000 this year between our carved osprey raffle and Woodstack 2,” said Altaffer.
Woodstack 1 grossed a little over $30,000 for the project, he said.
The stack was built circa 1902 by the Morris-Fisher Company to handle steam that powered its fish processing operations. Today the stack serves as a navigational landmark for working watermen and boaters as well as a symbol of Reedville’s menhaden fishing heritage.
“Most of the factories are gone, so the stack is the last standing iconic structure,” said Altaffer.
A 22-person Save the Stack Committee was formed in April 2010 to raise funds for an extensive restoration which included replacement of the top 30 feet of the stack, the installation of a lightning protection system, and capping the top of the stack to avoid future deterioration.
Omega Protein Inc. donated a considerable portion of the funds and transferred ownership of the stack and a portion of the land on which it stands to the Greater Reedville Association.
With restoration complete, the committee is now raising additional funds to provide for future preservation needs, a plaque honoring major donors to the campaign along with a brief stack history, and a display at the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum.
“This will put the final bow on the project,” said Altaffer.
The entire project, including restoration and display additions, will cost $250,000, he said.
Tickets for Woodstack 2 are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Children 12 and younger are free.
Tickets can be purchased at Lilian Lumber Home Center, Crazy Crab Restaurant, Jett’s Hardware, Noblett’s Appliance, Coldwell Banker Chesapeake Bay Properties, the museum or by calling 453-6529.
