FREDERICKSBURG—The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has determined that the Cat Point Creek Bridge will remain closed until the construction of the new bridge is complete.

The bridge was temporarily closed to traffic last week based on the results of the most recent inspection. The inspection revealed extensive corrosion and deterioration of the steel beams that support the 70-year-old structure.

“Closing the bridge to all traffic would be the best way to ensure the safety of the traveling public,” said Fredericksburg district bridge engineer Gary Shelor.

The bridge, on Route 624 in Richmond County, carries approximately 2,200 vehicles a day across Cat Point Creek, a major tributary of the Rappahannock River.

Construction of the new structure began last year and is expected to be completed by late fall. VDOT is working with Abernathy Construction to ensure that construction of the $5.13 million bridge remains on time and on budget.

Motorists will be detoured to Route 634 to Route 636 and back to Route 624 at German’s Corner. The detour route is approximately 5.5 miles.
