Old School places first
in Turkey Shoot Regatta

The 2007 Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta set sail on the Rappahannock River October 6 and 7.

Jerry Latell on Old School took first overall in the two-day competition for the Lightning Division.

Latell won the Red Fleet race Saturday and crossed the finish line first in Sunday’s pursuit race. He will represent the Turkey Shoot Regatta at the National Hospice Regatta in Annapolis in 2008.

Wayland Rennie on Trilogy took first overall in the Flying Cloud Division. He took first place in the Grey Fleet on Saturday and finished second overall in Sunday’s pursuit race.

Joe Dame of White Stone won the Miss Ann’s Choice Trophy for the most beautiful boat. His boat, Windfall, is a 57-foot Rhodes Yawl built in 1951.

To enter the race in either division, the boat’s design had to be 25 years old or older. Competitors included several entries from North and South Carolina and Alabama as well as from Maryland and Virginia.

This regatta isv a major fund raising effort of the Hospice of the Northern Neck, Riverside Hospice and Middlesex Hospice. It raises some $25,000 each year.

The regatta and its associated activities are hosted each year by Ken and Karen Knull at Yankee Point Sailboat Marina in Lancaster.

Some 130 vessels competed in the regatta. The boats were placed in several fleets based upon their handicaps. The Red and Black Fleets comprised the Lightning Division. The other fleets made up the Flying Cloud Division.

The top three winners in each class are:

Red Fleet: First, Old School, Jerry Latell; second, Phil Denvir, Phil Denvir; third, Salute, Peter Knight.

Black Fleet: First, Cygnet, Jack Renire; second, Buckwheat, Joe Waters; third, Last Boat III, Frank Murphy.

Grey Fleet: First, Trilogy, Wayland Rennie; second, Tatiana, Charles Parrott; third, Jacqueline, William Johnson.

Green Fleet: First, Whistler, Warren Ryan ; second, Key Lime, Robert and Conrad Wineland; third, Desperado, Ric Bauer.

Blue Fleet: First, Poe Bird, Lee Williams; second, Volare, Doug Power; third, Sunrise, Jim Covington.

Yellow Fleet: First, Phoebe, Devin Carr; second, Windkeeper, Rich Gill; third, Xanudu, John Stevens.

White Fleet: First, More Leverage, Steve Turnbull; second, Quest, Richard Hazlegrove; third, Fate, Charles Bradshaw.

Purple Fleet: First, Packer Tacker, Chuck Thompson; second, Sundancer, James Steven Shaw; third, Corsair, Wayne Bishop.

Neon Green Fleet: First, Victorious, Bill Dickson; second, More Cowbell, Andrew Arola; third, Felicity, Bob Adcock.

Orange Fleet: First, Tantalus, Richard Seymann; second, none, David Leach; third, Charlotte Amelia, Barr Brooks.

Red/Grey Fleet: First, Ladybug, Ned Crockett; second, Mariperry, Ed Zakaib; third, Cream Puff, Chuck Carmichael.
