108 receive diplomas at Lancaster High

Nathan Tyler Rose and Taylor Ann Nelson Fariss led the Class of 2009 during Lancaster High School’s commencement exercises at the school last Saturday.

Rose addressed fellow graduates as the valedictorian. Fariss was the salutatorian and introduced the guest speaker, Velma K. Benns.
Rose, who has already received an associate’s degree from Rappahannock Community College, plans to major in engineering at the University of Virginia. He is the son of Bernard and Ann Rose of Weems.
Fariss will pursue a career in public policy and law at The College of William and Mary. She is the daughter of Jean Nelson of Weems.
Rose told fellow graduates their high school careers could be compared to a composition.
Benns, who is a Northumberland County native and sister of LHS administrative assistant Deborah Thomas, told the students that their graduation from high school is the start of a whole new life, one where they have to say “I am the master of my fate.”
Benns told the students that, in essence, the best laid plans often change when life throws you curves. She started her college career at James Madison University and, after a few life-changing events, ended up at Christopher Newport. She never thought during her college days that she’d be a probation officer, but that’s exactly what happened and she now serves as a Deputy Chief U.S. Probation Officer in the Richmond Division.
“Don’t ever sell yourself short because you come from a small town,” she said.
And although the year 2009 has been filled with bankruptcy, failing industries and economic uncertainty, this is “an America where there is still promise,” Benns said.
Thomas read the names of the 108 graduates while LHS principal Sandra Spears distributed the diplomas.
