Some 800 people attended the funeral service at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock, including law enforcement representatives from across the state, said funeral home director Thomas Gayle.

Greene County Sheriff Scott Haas said the majority of his 50-person department made the trip east and participated in the services. Sheriff Haas also thanked the Virginia State Police for its support and counseling following the tragedy.

“The calls don’t stop and the people still need your help,” he said.

Dozens of motorcyclists from BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse), for which Chad was an active volunteer known as “Ace,” came from as far away as Kansas City, Missouri, to attend the funeral, although many had never met Chad.

Local speakers included Judge Tris Hyde and the Rev. Lee Scripture. Captain Randall Snead from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office also spoke.

Hyde and Scripture both talked about Chad’s younger years as an athlete at Northumberland High School. They described him as a focused and dedicated young man who strove for excellence in everything he did.

“When Chad got hit, he always got back up,” Hyde said. “He didn’t complain. He got up when he didn’t feel good and kept playing.”

Co-worker Deputy Sean Sellari described Chad as a family man who was, “hell bent on not letting his job, as much as he loved it, interfere with his responsibility to his boys.”

Another friend wrote a poem for Chad, which Capt. Snead read at the funeral:

“When your hair stands up on your neck, that’s only Chad, and he’s got your back.”

The sentiment of Chad’s ever-presence was echoed by Hyde: “Chad is with us. He is here with us today . . . He is still in the ballgame. A few days ago he took a hard hit in the line of duty, doing his job, but the Chad we know has recovered.”

A procession of more than 200 cars and motorcycles followed the casket to the burial at Wicomico United Methodist Church Cemetery in Wicomico Church.
